Things To Think About
There are several things that you need to be aware of when traveling to Nicaragua. Being in a rain forest climate brings its challenges. Dengue and Chikungunya is here in Nueva Guinea so you should have your mosquito repellent ready. Most mosquito bites occur at dawn and dusk and during the night.
There are some vaccines in Nicaragua that are recommended and some that are required according to the Center For Disease Control (CDC).
All travelers should up-to-date on routine vaccines before every trip. These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, and your yearly flu shot.
Recommended Vaccines for Nicaragua
Hepatitis A
- CDC recommends this vaccine because you can get hepatitis A through contaminated food or water in Nicaragua, regardless of where you are eating or staying.
Hepatitis B
- You can get Hepatitis B from medical procedures.
Typhoid
- You can get typhoid through contaminated food or water in Nicaragua. CDC recommends this vaccine for most travelers, especially if you are staying with friends or relatives, visiting smaller cities or rural areas, or if you are an adventurous eater.
Malaria
When traveling in Nicaragua, you should avoid mosquito bites to prevent illnesses. You may need to take prescription medicine before, during, and after your trip to prevent malaria, depending on your travel plans, such as where you are going, when you are traveling, and if you are spending a lot of time outdoors or sleeping outside. Talk to your doctor about how you can prevent malaria while traveling.
Chikungunya, & Dengue
For Dengue and Chikungunya there are no vaccines or preventative perscriptions. However, check with your doctor and CDC for the latest. Take preventative measures wear long pants or dresses at dusk and dawn and at night. Bring insect repellant. Sleep under a mosquito net.
Rabies
Rabies can be found in dogs, bats, and other mammals in Nicaragua.
Yellow Fever
Yellow Fever is a required Vaccine if traveling from an infected area. This does not include the United States.
